The city of Trogir welcomed us with an interesting experience. After the long travel we wanted to go to the toilet. There was no problem to find one, however, inside of it a strange curiosity happened. On entering, the lady informed us that we have to buy a ticket, which cost 5 Croatian kuns; also she told us that if we lose the ticket, we won’t be allowed to go to the toilet. Then the lady came out of the cashier’s window, took the ticket, tore it, meaning – punched it and after this formalities we could finally go to the toilet. And this is where I cease this story.

We went to the old town. The city’s edges with numerous channels, where the number of boats and cutters were moored, didn’t give an impression as if it was the most beautiful city in the Croatia (although the guidebooks assured otherwise) – but this were only the appearances. When we reached the old town, we soon verified our assessment.

The city’s marketplace is located in the center – the place when through the number of centuries, all citizens were gathering in order to take collegiate important decisions, concerning their town or to execute the sentences on the condemned men. Generally, in the Trogir was no prisons and the penitentiary system was the most effective in the whole Europe. At the city’s loggia, near to 6 columns, which were decorated by Nokola Firentinc, there is a place with the metal ring fixed to the limestone wall. The person, who violated the law, was tighten by the arms to mentioned ring with the description of violation on the forehead. Such person, had to stand exposed to the scorching sun and to the public view for whole day. After such day, the person got the order to leave the city without the possibility of coming back. In this way, the city got rid of criminals, without the expenditures on prisons, maintenance of prisoners and the criminals didn’t suffer any physical harm.

In the eastern part of the city, the Roman temple is situated, which was building through the number of centuries, and it is considered as the architectural pearl of Croatia – Cathedral of St. Lawrence. Presumably, the most beautiful of its parts is the main portal – sculpted in stone by the master Radowan in 1240. On its both sides, the stone lions and figures of Adam and Eve are situated. The Cathedral has three naves, separated one from another by the massive columns. Gothic elements, such as the cross vaults and the rosette in the façade, as well as the baroque elements – mainly the altar with the beautiful paintings and sculptures, predominantly made by Italian artists. In the Cathedral’s treasure-house, the entrance to which costs an extra money, an interesting collection of liturgical equipment, medieval manuscripts as well as the gothic triptych made of ivory are displayed. From the 47 meters high bell tower the city’s panorama can be seen.
Generally, there are some more churches to visit. In each of them something interesting may be observed: The church from the XIII century of St. John the Baptist with the exhibition of painting of XIV and XV century, the church of Saint Barbara from the IX-X century or the gothic single-nave Saint Dominic’s church with the interesting portal dated back to 1372.
